With all of the drama that led up to this season’s NYFW, the designers were able to turn everyone’s attention back to where it should be, the runway. There was no shortage of glamour and indulgence this year with Fall promising to be a return to the best that the 70’s had to offer. Below are the biggest trends that I spotted walking down the catwalk.
Trend: 70’s Subdued
(BCBG Max Azria, JCrew, Karen Walker)You’d have to be blind, deaf, and dumb to have missed the 70’s influences that were in practically every designer’s collection. This was definitely the greatest overarching trend from the runway, so much so that it influences many of the other trends that were seen. The colors, the silhouettes, the details all had a flare for the decade but with more elevated construction and modern additions that keep the looks from being too costume-y and satirical.

Trend: Dark Neutrals
(Rebecca Minkoff, Banana Republic, Rodebjer)The last several Fall seasons have seen influxes of color, but it’s clear that pendulum is swinging back towards basic neutrals but in darker hues like navy, brown, tan, and black. Typically seen in ready-to-wear separates from the designers, these pieces will make mixing of shades fun, easy, and great foundations for brighter, more colorful add-ons.

Trend: Embellishments
(Jenny Packham, Naeem Khan, Oscar de la Renta)I loved all of the sparkle and glitter I saw in everyone’s collections this year. There will definitely be no skimping on glamour come this Fall. Whether it was beaded jumpsuits, feathers, or glittering swing fringe hemlines, the runway was all about the details.

Trend: Friends of Fur
(Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Tibi)Perhaps a bit more controversial of a trend, depending on your political stances, it appears the fur is back in a big way. Almost everyone had at least one piece in their collection that incorporated fur, the most popular seeming to be the belted fur stole which many designers style a-symmetrically.

Trend: Prints Charming
(Suno, Carolina Herrera, Thakoon)Playing off of the 70s trend, you knew their would be prints galore coming down the catwalk in a myriad of shades and textures. Plaids, geometric, and even florals dominated many of the most talked about collections for NYFW.

Trend: Lacey Ladies
(Katie Ermilio, Zimmermann, Rodarte)There was a definite turn towards a more feminine silhouette and texture with many designers utilizing lace in a big way. Whether it was paired with tougher textiles like leather, embellished with jewels and feathers, or left to stand on it’s own entirely, lace was a big component of the 70’s throwback trend.
